reading We Should All Be Millionaires by Rachel Rodgers, I started reflecting on money, opportunity, and why Latina, Hispanic, and Native women are still among the most underpaid women in the U.S. Here are my thoughts\u2014and why I believe we can change that story.<br><br><em>Inspired by episode 001 of the Labereee Podcast<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s a conversation we need to keep having\u2014and not just in boardrooms or policy meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We need to talk about the wage gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I recently started reading We Should All Be Millionaires by Rachel Rodgers, and one thing hit me hard:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women are still earning less than men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even after laws were passed years ago to protect equal pay\u2026 the gap is still here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when you look deeper into the numbers, Latinas, Hispanic women, and Native women are still among the most underpaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a Latina, that hit home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because for me, this isn\u2019t just a statistic on paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Growing up Latina in USA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was born in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But growing up, I didn\u2019t hear people say \u201cLatina\u201d very often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was called Mexican.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while there\u2019s pride in that, there\u2019s also a bigger conversation around identity, opportunity, and how many of us were raised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of us watched the women around us work incredibly hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cleaning homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Working in hotels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">School kitchens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Janitorial services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caregiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jobs that are physically demanding\u2026 emotionally draining\u2026 and often underpaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I want to say this clearly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is dignity in every one of those jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hard work is honorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But many Latina women were taught to survive\u2014not necessarily to negotiate, ask for more, build wealth, or believe we belonged in the rooms where bigger decisions and bigger paychecks happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why I believe so many Latinas are underpaid<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is my personal opinion based on lived experience and what I\u2019ve seen around me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A big reason many Latinas remain underpaid is because so many of us start in industries with low wages and very little upward mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And on top of that, many of us were raised with messages like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">\u201cBe grateful for what you have.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cDon\u2019t ask for too much.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cWork hard and stay humble.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cDon\u2019t make people uncomfortable.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cPlay it safe.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those messages may have helped our families survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they can also keep us small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can keep us accepting less than what we bring to the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even when we\u2019re doing more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Escaping minimum wage starts with mindset\u2014and strategy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, changing this starts with belief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have to believe we belong in better-paying rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have to believe we can negotiate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have to believe we can ask for more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have to believe we can own businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lead teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Build wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Invest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Create offers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charge premium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apply for the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speak up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then we pair belief with action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That can look like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">learning a skill that increases income<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">applying for higher-paying roles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">negotiating compensation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">starting a side business<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">building multiple streams of income<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">finding mentors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">talking openly about money<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">teaching our daughters what we didn\u2019t learn early enough<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s how we begin changing the numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But one woman at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One raise at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One bold move at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For the Latina reading this<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve ever felt like you work harder than everyone around you and still get paid less\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I see you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve ever felt nervous asking for more\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve ever questioned whether you were \u201cqualified enough\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your story does not have to stop where survival started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are allowed to earn more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are allowed to ask for more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are allowed to build wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are allowed to take up space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you are allowed to become the first woman in your family to change the financial trajectory for everyone after you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And we need more conversations like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Listen to Episode 001 of the
